Asian consumers are the most enthusiastic mobile payments users, with 69 percent favouring mobile over traditional forms of payment, according to research by consulting and technology services provider Accenture.
The surveyed Asian consumers were led by Chinese consumers (76 percent), India (75 percent), followed by Korea (56 percent) and Japan (47 percent).
In addition to this, 47 percent of tech-forward consumers in China indicated they had used a mobile phone to make a purchase in the last six months, followed by 42 percent in Korea and 33 percent in Japan.
Outside of Asia, Brazil registered the second highest positive response in which 70 percent of consumers favoured using mobile phones for most payments. In comparison, the US and Europe only saw 24 percent of consumers voice their support for m-commerce.
While the survey indicates there are issues to address in terms of privacy and security, these findings are good news for mobile network operators because consumers have requirements they look to operators, technology vendors, or financial institutions to address, said Andy Zimmerman, director, mobility services, Accenture.
Almost half of the most active mobile devices users revealed they would welcome the opportunity to pay for goods and services using their mobile phone. This finding is despite 73 percent of respondents expressing significant privacy and identity theft concerns.
