Banking group BBVA plans to deploy 200 of its
newly-designed ‘ABIL’ ATMs in Spain before rolling them out
globally.

The new ATMs feature a touch screen display, a
rotating 90 degree screen for increased privacy and a single slot
that accepts cash, cheques and passbooks while also distributing
cash and receipts.

An initial pilot saw twenty new units
introduced in Spain last year and after this tranche of 200 are
installed in Spain the company intends to roll out further units in
other locations focusing on the Southern US and South America.

“BBVA is constantly looking for ways to
strengthen relations with its customers and the project was not
guided by how to further automate the terminal, but how to humanise
the machine” said Vicente Amores, NCR’s global director for
BBVA.

The project is the result of a partnership
among BBVA, ATM technology provider NCR Corporation, electronics
manufacturer Fujitsu and the design consultancy IDEO.
