Canadian coffee and doughnut chain Tim Hortons
will begin a nationwide roll-out of Interac debit cards after fears
of a ‘slowing-down’ of transactions through e-payments were allayed
by rigorous piloting.
Tim Hortons announced it aims to accept
Interac debit payments at 90% of its 3,000 stores across the
country, covering locations such as Ontario, Québec, New Brunswick,
Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and
Labrador.
“Tim Hortons is proud to partner with a
world-class Canadian payment network like the Interac network to
bring more value and the speed and convenience of debit payments to
Canadians coast to coast,” said Roland Walton, COO for Tim
Hortons.
The coffee shop expressed concerns over
slowdowns at cash registers and customer security and as such
resisted debit cards as a payment method up until 2003. As it began
to introduce debit cards in Western Canada and further expanded its
e-payments offerings three years ago by accepting MasterCard credit
cards and prepaid gift cards, those concerns faded.
