Groupon has launched a point of sale app for the iPad in the US called Breadcrumb POS.

Breadcrumb POS is a modified version of the Breadcrumb hospitality point of sale system that Groupon acquired last year. The mobile payments service is aimed at local merchants and will work as a dashboard to accept and manage payments.

The app works alongside a card reader that has to be purchased as part of Groupon’s Breadbox hardware package. Packages range from $545 to $1,070 and each include a Breadcrumb card reader, a WiFi iPad 2 and an iPad stand.

Breadcrumb POS accepts credit cards Visa, MasterCard and Discover at a rate of 1.8% plus $0.15 per transaction. Rates for AMEX cards vary by business type.

An early version of the app was accidentally released in the iTunes store. The permanent version is now available.
