Hardware provider Ingenico has partnered with BNP Paribas Fortis on a project to boost smartphone payment acceptance in Belgium. The deal means that retailers and professionals will soon be able to receive card payments on their smartphones across the country.

The world’s third largest bank will offer customers the chance to use their phone for transactions via an application on the smart phone. This links with a pocket card reader using a Bluetooth connection. The retailer types the amount into the smartphone application and the customer responds by entering their pin code via the card reader.

Ingenico will use its subsidiaries Easycash and ROAM to provide the technology for this smartphone payment system.

BNP Paribas Fortis customers can already use their phones to view their accounts and carry out banking operations on their Smartphone and the bank is hopeful that they will be encouraged to collect payments using their mobile too.

The partnership was announced during Cartes, in Paris.
