Canadian bank CIBC and mobile operator Rogers have announced that their NFC payments network is will go live on 16th November.

In anticipation of the countrywide roll out, the two companies had Canadian Olympic triathlete Simon Whitfield perform the county’s first NFC transaction, buying a coffee using a BlackBerry smartphone.

Suretap; Rogers’s NFC payment service will be available to Canadians with CIBC credit cards and customers of the two businesses can order NFC-enabled SIMs now in readiness for the launch.

The service will initially be limited to just two smartphones, the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and BlackBerry Curve 9360. However, the partners will be expanding the number of manufacturers in 2013 to include Android and Windows Phone 8 platforms.

At the launch David Robinson, Vice President of Emerging Business, Rogers Communications expressed his excitement at the possibility of expanding NFC services in Canada; "In a few years, a mobile wallet will be as common as a camera on a smartphone. The opportunity in mobile payments for our business is just getting started — our vision is to take the millions of cards Canadians carry today and to make them instantly accessible and secured on the SIM card of a smartphone."
