mPOS provider Square has launched a gift card service for its Square Wallet phone app.

The cards are delivered via email and automatically saved to the recipients’ Square Wallet. They can then be redeemed at stores accepting the Square gift card.

Square claims that this service has no additional cost or tools for businesses.

Jack Dorsey, Square co-founder and chief executive, said: "I just sent my parents a gift to their favourite bookstore, Left Bank Books in St. Louis. It’s incredibly fun to give my friends unique and meaningful gifts, treat them to their favourite neighbourhood places, all from my couch."

Square wallet operates in over 200,000 businesses across the US. In November it announced that it was going live in 7,000 Starbucks stores.
