Starbucks is to introduce contactless payments in 550 of its UK stores.
The coffee giant is collaborating with Barclaycard Global Payment Acceptance and Visa Europe to roll out the near field communication point of sale terminals.
Starbucks will be joining other retailers such as Marks & Spencer, which recently launched contactless payments in 644 of its UK stores, and Boots, which introduced the technology to 600 UK and Ireland stores earlier this year.
Vice president of marketing at Starbucks UK Ian Cranna said: "With only around 1 in 3 of our customers now paying with cash, we recognise the importance and benefits of embracing new payment technologies at Starbucks."
"We are now able to provide our customers with the quickest and most convenient ways to pay, to speed up service and cut queue times," he concluded.
Starbucks’ has previously developed a mobile payment app that allows its loyalty card scheme customers to pay in stores via a barcode generated on their smartphone.
