Digital security company Gemalto has selected Fingerprint Cards’ biometric systems to add new features to its dual interface payment cards.

Under the collaboration, Gemalto will leverage Fingerprints’ T-Shape sensor to deliver biometric EMV payment cards to its bank customers.

Fingerprints’ T-Shape module is designed to integrate into smartcards through conventional manufacturing processes.

It also runs on ultra-low power to eliminate the need to place a battery on the card.

In addition, securely storing the biometric templates on the card prevents fraud and misuse.

Gemalto senior vice-president of payment card business line Sylvie Gibert said: “We evaluated a number of biometric systems for cards and Fingerprints came out with the most performing and promising solution.

“With Fingerprints, we are bringing stronger, faster and more seamless authentication to payment cards.”

Fingerprint Cards will also deliver a few hundred thousand sensors to Gemalto in two years. Furthermore, the contract is the company’s first volume order in the biometric smartcard industry.

Fingerprints SVP of business line smartcards Thomas Rex said: “Working with Gemalto, the leader in EMV Payment cards & digital security, is a gratifying collaboration and the recognition that our technology can meet their strong requirements in terms of performance.

“We are looking forward to seeing the first biometric cards in consumers’ hands, adding much-needed strong authentication to contactless payments without impacting the user experience.”
