Augmented Identity company IDEMIA has forged a partnership with Nationwide Building Society to roll out recycled plastic payment cards in the UK from 2021.

The partners aim to produce 5.4 million new plastic payment cards annually and save 35 metric tons of carbon.

The new IDEMIA-sourced cards are being made from recycled PVC, which will help Nationwide reduce its carbon footprint significantly.

Nationwide is said to be the first high street lender planning to offer the new eco-friendly cards starting next year.

Initially, the cards will be distributed to the bank’s current account holders, and later across its product range.

The alliance is part of Nationwide’s pledge to eliminate single-use plastics by the year 2025.

Nationwide Building Society chief strategy and sustainability officer Claire Tracey said: “Earlier this year we became carbon neutral for energy and emissions for all internal operations and Society vehicles.

“We have also set aside £1bn for our members to borrow at a special low interest rate if they want to make their homes greener.

“Today’s news is another step for us in helping the UK to achieve net-zero by 2050 and a significant step in us eliminating single-use plastics by 2025.”

The latest alliance is part of IDEMIA’s eco-friendly package deal with GREENPAY.
