Mastercard has launched an augmented reality (AR) app that enables its users to explore their card’s benefits through an immersive experience.
The new app brings the benefits of the card to life by providing a 360-degree virtual environment through interactive portals.
To use the app, cardholders have to first scan their Mastercard and then scan the area around them with their phone.
The app will provide three portals, which users need to tap to bring that area to life and explore the related benefits.
The issuing partners of Mastercard can white label the technology.
iPhone users in the US can access the app in the App Store from the second quarter of this year. A broader roll-out is planned later in 2020.
Mastercard chief marketing and communications officer Raja Rajamannar said: “At Mastercard, we’re using our technology and solutions to deliver multi-sensory experiences for consumers every day – whether they’re shopping, taking transit, or exploring the card benefits they care about.
“By leveraging an intuitive AR design, cardholders can now easily find and fully explore their benefits that otherwise might have been overlooked.”
In announcing the new app, Mastercard cited the J.D. Power 2018 U.S. Credit Card Satisfaction Study. The study noted that even though rewards increase the satisfaction of cardholders, only a third of credit card users understand all the benefits available.
