Mobile Merchant has joined forces with UnionPay International (UPI) to help SMEs in South Africa gain access to more customers utilising the latter’s cardholder base worldwide.

The partnership will see Mobile Merchant’s entire merchant base accept UnionPay cards.

Mobile Merchant’s mobile terminal solutions enables SMEs to open to business in three to five days from application approval to installation.

UnionPay International Africa Branch general manager Luping Zhang said: “We strongly appreciate Mobile Merchant’s ongoing effort in driving technological innovation to support local businesses and the community.

“We encourage all UnionPay cardholders to support small businesses and help to revive the local economy”.

UnionPay cards are issued in more than ten countries across Africa. Among these countries are Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana, South Africa, Madagascar and Mauritius.

In September last year, UnionPay International partnered with Interswitch East Africa (Kenya) to accelerate payment digitalisation across Africa.

The agreement sees Interswitch serving as a third-party service provider (TPSP) for UnionPay International in East Africa.
