US-based full-service neobank Unifimoney has joined forces with CPI Card Group to issue contactless credit and debit cards made with recovered ocean-bound plastic.

The Visa-branded payment card, named Second Wave, will be EMV compliant and dual interface capable.

CPI Card Group secure card solutions SVP and general manager Guy DiMaggio said: “We estimate that for every one million Second Wave payment cards produced, over one ton of plastic will be diverted from entering the world’s oceans, waterways, and shorelines.”

Visa corporate responsibility & sustainability VP and global head Douglas Sabo said: “At Visa, we are working to make commerce greener and more sustainable.”

Unifimoney is expected to first launch the debit cards this summer and has selected UMB Bank as its issuing partner.

The San Francisco-based neobank has also partnered with The Ocean Foundation so that each time the new card is used by its customers the bank will contribute to the foundation.
